What boron actually does, and what the trials measured
Boron is a trace mineral found in fruit, nuts and legumes, with no established essential requirement in humans. The interest in it for men rests on a small set of short, specific human studies. In one controlled study, healthy male volunteers taking roughly 10 mg of boron a day for a week showed a rise in free testosterone, a fall in oestradiol, and reductions in several inflammatory markers (Naghii et al., J Trace Elem Med Biol 2011). An earlier and much-cited study found that boron repletion after a depletion period raised serum oestradiol and testosterone — but that study was conducted in postmenopausal women, not men, and it is routinely quoted in supplement marketing as though it were a men's testosterone trial (Nielsen et al., FASEB J 1987).
A detailed review of the boron literature pulls these threads together across bone, inflammation and hormone metabolism without overselling the hormonal findings (Pizzorno, Integrative Medicine 2015). The picture is a mineral with real biochemical effects at easily achievable doses, studied in groups small enough that any single result should be held loosely.
What the boron evidence does not show
It does not show that boron makes men feel different. In a study of men with late-onset hypogonadism, a standardised extract taken daily for a month was associated with a shift in testosterone towards the normal range in most participants (Tambi et al., Andrologia 2012).
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that Eurycoma longifolia raises serum total testosterone in men, while flagging that the underlying trials are small, varied in extract and dose, and uneven in quality (Leisegang et al., Medicina 2022). That is about as good as botanical evidence gets here, and still a long way from the standard applied to a medicine.
What the tongkat ali evidence does not show
It does not show that tongkat ali does much for young men with healthy baseline hormones; the men who improved most across trials were tired, stressed, older or starting low. Nor does it show that any tongkat ali product works, only that specific standardised extracts did something in specific groups. - Assuming any tongkat ali is the studied tongkat ali. The trials used standardised extracts; root powder at an unstated concentration is a different product wearing the same name.
